Combermere and Barry's Bay Riding

Updated: Jul 21

A couple of times have been asked what I know about mountain biking in the Barry's Bay and Combermere area. To simplify and make it easier have placed all the info I know of riding in Combermere and Barry's Bay. You know so don't have to go digging to find all the links to the info and such to share it.

While did some exploration of various tracks most didn't pan out. Though with only being up there for 2-3 days at a time one's time is a bit limited to really start figuring it out. Here is links to three rides in the two trail systems that have existing trails.

There is a third peak near Gun Peak and McGillivary but the lack of mapping detail it is hard to tell if it is in the Thomas P Murray system or not. One maps say a ATV/snowmobile trails gets one up there but hard to know if it is actually private land.

Trail maps are limited and to be honest anything map wise currently is lacking. However there is two areas that have some mapping. Spectacle Lakes maps and info can be found here,

Thomas P Murray Recreation Trails,

Update- Madawaska District finally has put maps online for the recreation area.

In late 2019 some trails where recorded on Trailforks however again at this time there is nothing else mapped to date.

First few visits to Cobermere and Barry;s Bay area had been able to stay at a friend's parents cottage but like most things changes happen. The 2 trips up in 2020 stayed at the Ash Grove Inn.

Outdoor gear wise if need gear for camping and cooking in the woods and you forgot something MAD Outdoors will be the local shop.

There is no bike shops in Barry's Bay so any parts, tires, tubes, and such you have to bring with you.

Food wise aside from hitting the Metro in Barry's Bay or hauling food up with you. Option have tried and is great is of course the restaraunt at the Ash Grove Inn which you can order Take Away to eat in your room.

The other one have tried is the Bent Anchor which has good food. The owner retired and left Toronto. Took it over a few years ago and even preps his own meats in the smokers he has.

The owner of the Bent Anchor also owns Bent Pizza while haven't tried it but hear it is pretty good.

There is of course a Tim Horton's in Barry's Bay. Which if you came up via Highway 41 from Napanee is the only one on the road. The only other recommendation is to make a stop at the park in the center of Barry's Bay which is dedicated to Janusz " Zura" Zurakowski Battle of Britain fighter pilot and test pilot for the Avro Arrow.

While there is not a lot of trails and info on riding options. I think as the demographic of the residents change I am guessing more will eventually be found and mapped. but what is there is enough to start.
