It is the end of the year 2022 and athletes I know of are busy sharing their Strava stats for all to see before midnight as their year in review. Well we here at Team No Fixed Income go a different path.
So to begin here is the simple Strava numbers from 2022. But it doesn't tell it all. It doesn't show the July 28th surgery and 3 months of near inactivity for healing. Nor the pain from all that. But let's look at a few other things from 2022.
On the day of my knee surgery I had ridden 1 year 7 months and 28 days in total. When you do the math that is 572 days of riding., every day a ride of some kind. Now I don't want to give the false impression that things are all hunky dory and am not disappointed with not getting more first for me summits nor new things/places ridden. Or even completion of creative riding challenges I can create, I think pretending it is all ok gives others the false idea that it is not ok to be disappointed and feel down about things. A perfectly acceptable human reaction and one that we tend to suppress.
However despite coming up short in a few areas riding wise in 2022 there is a few things did that are of note,
The unofficial Fat Viking the last weekend of January 2022, unofficial because I am a cheap Dirtbag who only uses 27.5 plus.
Scrappy Badger 2022 saw me instead of racing driving to a remote location to be at a long course aid station and check point.
May 7th also presented the opportunity to bag myself another Peak Bagger high point.
July 16th the Batawa/Trenton 5 Summits Ride
The fall of 2022 saw the retirement of the Wideangle frame due to old age.
It was sad to see this retire as it has been a huge part of managing both the physical injuries as well as the mental injuries from March 2019.
However there is a project in the works to address the current lack of a second Mental Illness Support Hardtail.
This year in the months prior to surgery had me sort of return to coaching. Well maybe less coaching and more of riding with someone how I started mountain biking 37 years ago. Ended up helping a road rider I know shift to gravel riding. And to be honest it ended up being more fun showing her new things as well as sharing some of what have learned over the years.
Unfortunately due to the July 28th knee surgery and the three months of healing with all that entails. A few challenges had to be put aside. and will have to think a bit about if any of those put aside will be considered to try to do in 2023.
In the end 2022 wasn't a great year nor was it a bad year just ended up with way more challenge then had anticipated.
