The first week of of October was able to take another road trip to Barry's Bay for a couple of days. And this presented an opportunity to look into a spot called Weasel Peak Lookout
After arriving in Barry's Bay and getting set where was staying it was off to the spot wanted to see. Back in 2020 had spotted Weasel Peak Lookout on the map and wanted the next time if was able to come up Barry's Bay to go there to visit Weasel Peak. And now was the opportunity to try to get to Weasel Peak.
In 2020 when was up in Barry's Bay had wondered about where Weasel Peak was accessible. As the mapping of trails and tracks for this area are not exactly great. So hadn't fully thought it through how to do it. Plus had the other two peaks I had wanted to try and get to in 2020. But in 2021 when found was doing another trip up looked at everything I could and had a bit better idea of maybe it was possible. And with that in mind parked the Dirtbag Ute at the trail head just off County Road 62. Loaded up and headed in.
Left the Dirt Bag Ute and followed the track to the intersection where would turn left and head up to Weasel Peak. At the intersection spotted the OFSC sign that said trail #164. So headed left and started into new territory and zero bugs. One advantage of doing rides like this in October is next to no bugs. Seems like a small issue but speaking from experience this far north blood sucking bugs are abundant during the summer and such. Which makes map reading and navigation when riding in new areas like Barry’s Bay challenging as happened in 2019. And no bugs means less rush map checking while navigating.
While the initial bit of the ride in was standard skidder road after about 15-20 minutes it changed. The incline rapidly increased to steep and lots of rock which meant the usual hike and push bike to seek the high point. I know some will read this and say how can you do this hiking thing with the severe injuries. Well there is no secret as have found out that walking on concrete hurts because concrete has no give and all the impact force goes up the body. Plus one has to be smart which means taking time and pausing every bit to assess which way to go.
After the hike-a-bike got to more mellow part and rode up past the lookout on the left heading for the potential high point or peak. After about 15 minutes got to what I suspected was the high point or Weasel Peak. Unfortunately it was all trees so here was no look out. So pulled out the map to do some rough figuring. And based on looking around seeing certain things like that everything around kinda seemed to go downhill figure was at the high point.
So after the usual summit toast and after putting the face part of the Super DH it was back down on the easy part of the descent to see the lookout view. Because if doing all that work it is bad to not pause and see this part of the Madawaska Valley. So while not a BC peak it was still fun. And as have said before be like the British mountain bikers who work with what they have terrain wise.
After enjoying the view and with the sun starting to get lower. Was starting to feel it get slightly cooler it was time to get off the mountain. From there it was into the rockier section which took time through as no awards for being injured. Cleared it all easily with no dabs. After the last bit of wash out arrived back at the junction with the E109 trail. Headed right follow the trail back to the trail head at County Road 62 where the Dirtbag Ute was awaiting with a cold Dr Pepper to reward for the ride.
After 14 minutes arrived at County Road 62 and crossed to the Ute. Cracked open the cooler to get a drink. And prepare to head back to where was staying after accomplishing the mission which was to find the lookout as well as from what can best figure was the high point or Weasel Peak.
And to top of the day of success was this,
