Retro Grouch Timing vs Non Retro Grouch Timing

Updated: Jul 21

Last week while creating a new bit of fun for myself by mapping a small hack old school kind of downhill. And during the last couple of runs for fun hid the GPS and used the recently resurrected X Monitor instead.

I haven't used the non GPS or Retro Grouch timing system since 2016 for any kind of race or even interval kind of timed ride or section. This time wanted to see if could ride faster and better while not being able to see the GPS unit at all. So in the pocket it went and just used the Retro Grouch timing device.

In the end it really was an experiment to see if this would work. And it seemed to have. The not having the GPS unit obvious on the bars. Where it is so easy to keep glancing down to see speed and such. Kind of a distraction at least to me. At least in this case noticed something interesting on the two hidden GPS runs when looked at the downloaded track on the computer.

That after stopping the timer the timer that the time matched the GPS record of the timed run. While it could be easy to scoff and dismiss this as a fluke. It is nice to see that despite the modern GPS and Satellite tracking abilities that one can still be pretty close within a few hundredsth of a second.

So gives further fuel to the idea of stuffing the GPS unit into a pack or pocket and only use this for ride timing during the actual ride.
