Just a personal observation based on experience as a MTBer and a victim of a crime using a vehicle as a weapon...
So approaching three years since had TBI aka Concussion from getting crushed by that driver. This is a reality have learned about trying to deal with the Ontario Medical System.... outside of Sports Governing Bodies good luck.
Despite visual evidence of head injury and TBI March 4th, 2019 no one have dealt with since this began has talked to me or listened to me about I might have issues. Zero concern that the helmet was destroyed and that left orbital bones had been fractured with the whole area swollen to the point they where worried that if sneezed wrong my eye would pop out of the socket. Have been dealing with memory issues since and despite numerous times bringing up the problem with Lifemark when they ask about problems. Have been blown off with a passing the buck attitude with it felt like it was being implied to just walk it off. And zero concerns with how the reported memory issues could seriously effect numerous aspects of my life.
Reality is unless the medical system doesn't treat concussion seriously then the Ontario Concussion Law aka Rowan's Law doesn't do much really to benefit those who have these injuries. Just dumps the work on Coaches and such who are not medical experts. It is really more of a look we did something exercise from the powers that be from where I am sitting. And dumps all the efforts on coaches, officials, provincial sport governing bodies, families and the athletes themselves. And when a TBI or concussion occurs after the coaches and /or sport officials do their part it gets all dumped on the athletes to fight a medical system that at least in my experience over two years does nothing. And leaves all the efforts to fight and navigate the system to the injured who on top of dealing with all the effects of the brain injury have to endlessly fight the two tiers of our health care system for anything. And thus increasing the chances of the athlete also developing mental illness or worsening existing mental illness. How does developing a mental illness due to TBI effect both the TBI and Mental Illness? Reality is how the Ontario Medical System treats TBI effects the patient and victims mental health and/or mental illness.
Yes there are a few good people in the system but the reality is the majority just want you to go away. The problem is there is no requirement with Rowan's Law as far as I know since am not an Attorney of Ontario Medical Services to take TBI seriously.
I get it we need to take Traumatic Brain Injury aka concussion in sport seriously but if only the coaches and sport governing bodies do the work it is not doing much. Unless the Ontario Medical System is forced to treat TBI the same way it hasn't changed things at all. And from my perspective this is reality of dealing with the Ontario Medical System.
