With a wrecked right knee and specific instructions from the knee doc to not use pedals that require twisting to escape. Kept it simple by going the path of simplicity. Flat pedals.
.
In 2019 while in Whistler got to ride on a set of Chromag Scarab pedals using a pair of skateboard shoes. No fancy stealth rubber or what ever sole. Just generic skate board shoes. And with the larger pedal area and longer pins worked well. Which gave me an idea of the direction to be headed to further work around the issues of the knee.
.
Last year went bigger with the Chromag Dagga pedals with the same effect. Regardless of shoe type with the larger pedal surface and pins Chromag uses it continues to be a great pedal. Even used a hiking boot with them no problem.
.
Some will scoff this and go on about trying this cleat and that SPD pedal. But the reality is one has to consider all parts of the problem in this case the wrecked knee and doctors orders. While easy to talk about the physical part. One has to acknowledge that it also comes with a mental part. That being overthinking everything gets tiring. And removing the overthinking about anything SPD simplifies everything greatly. And allows for more riding and fun with less stress. As well as it meets medical instructions to not be clipped in.
And besides isn't riding bikes supposed to be fun?
