Brighton Provincial Wildlife Area June 17th, 2021

Updated: Jul 21

Earlier this year spotted a wildlife area near Trenton while wandering around Google maps.

So out of curiosity did a search and one of the first entries I see about this spot is on of all things. A website for climbers and mountaineers looking to bag summits. Ok well any source is good to build up some info.

So with it in mind to explore and not expect anything but a ride. After getting to the parking spot off of Coltman Avenue. which to get to is a bit of a wander on ack farm roads. Left the Dirtbag Ute in the parking lot and headed down a small bit of single track which connected with ATV track and started climbing. Climb was a bit of lose rock, gravel, and sand.

Once reached the top there wasn't much to see in the way of a view. But without knowing it that is if your into that kind of thing that is bagging high points. Later when checking the GPS record after remembering fining this area on that Peakbagger website. Turns out can say bagged the East Summit.

After the East Summit fun little old school style double track downhill followed a track across the wide open area. Headed roughly towards the 401 as there should be a unmaintained road there if recall the sat view.

And at the end of this track spotted a small sign. Ducks Unlimited Canada. Cool to see a third project area near the 401 have been able to access on a mtb.

Heading east on the unmaintained road was the mix of gravel, sand, and loose rock. definitely could tell that it had been a road at some point before the asphalt or whatever was stripped and was brought down to unmaintained road status. And in several places could spot the 401 through the trees.

After a while of that and after pulling over in the weeds to allow a off road FIAT oops I meant Jeep driver to crawl by. Up a bit of hill with loose rock came to County 26 and the western entrance to the area.

Forgot my tripod so no ride photos. So just the usual sip from the flask before retracing some of the route back. Down the same loose rock and gravel road hill rode up.

On the way back kept an eye out for something had spotted heading west. Had spotted an ATV track headed up another hill from the main track. And of course was curious to see what was up there. And on the way back was a good time to check it out.

Found the spot with the ATV track going up a steep hill. So of course let USB go up it to see what is there. Had to hoof it up as definitely to steep to ride. At the top of the ridge could see all the way to Lake Ontario. And look south east in direction towards Trenton. And later looking at the ride data on elevation it would seem that this was an unofficial high point.

After the unofficial high point being bagged headed back down to the track to head back to the Dirtbag Ute. Which after about another 20 min of effort was back at the east parking lot of the Wildlife Area.

While not an extreme zone of singletrack in the end was still a good day out. And on top of exploring a new area. Got to grab another high point or as Peakbagger calls a summit in Ontario with a mtb. But got a bonus unofficial high point.
